Swiss Law protects UBS against US Charges

Swiss government said Wednesday it would seize UBS client data to prevent from being handed over to the US authorities. It is strongest announcement the Swiss authorities have made in the battle against the US Justice Department over the identities of 52,000 American clients at UBS.

Swiss law prohibits UBS from complying with US demands. The Swiss Justice Ministry said it would be a violation of Swiss law, and bank employees could be subject to prosecution. Swiss president is offering the possibility of an out-of-court settlement, but the US government is threatening to further strain on US-Swiss relationship.

To this date, almost half of worldwide offshore capital is sheltered by offshore secrecy jurisdiction in Swiss bank accounts. By all means, the US will try to destroy the offshore banking scheme, but once again, if you have a Swiss offshore bank account your money is in safe haven.
